Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 hotdogs
  • 3 loaves of crusty French or Italian Bread (for buns)
  • Yellow Mustard

For Slaw: (skip if using store-bought)

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 Tbs white vinegar
  • 1-2 tsp honey
  • 1/2 tsp celery seed
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 16 oz. raw cole slaw bagged mix
  • 1/4 cup green onions

For Sloppy Joe:

  • 1 TBS olive oil
  • 2 small red peppers, diced
  • 1 lb of ground beef (organic and grass-fed recommended)
  • 1 TBS homemade steak seasoning
  • 2 Tbs honey
  • 1 TBS red wine vinegar
  • 1 15 oz can of tomato sauce
  • 2 TBS of tomato paste

Instructions

For Hotdogs:

  1. Warm grill to medium heat. Grill hotdogs for 7 to 9 minutes, or until heated through, turning occasionally. When hot dogs are done on the grill, remove all at once to avoid overcooking.
  2. While hotdogs are cooking, heat oven to 350 degrees and allow crusty bread to warm through. I cooked mine about 8 minutes. Set aside.

For Cole Slaw:

  1. Stir together mayonnaise, vinegar, honey, celery seeds, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Add Cole slaw mix and green onions; toss gently to coat. Cover and chill before serving.

For Sloppy Joe:

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add oil and red pepper to the pan. Cook until veggies are softened, about 5 minutes. Stir frequently.
  2. Add ground beef, steak seasoning, and honey to the pan and combine.
  3. When the meat has browned, add vinegar, tomato sauce, and tomato paste.
  4. Reduce heat to medium and cook mixture 15-20 minutes, or until desired consistency.

To Assemble:

  1. Slice each piece of crust bread into 3 equal sections (about the size of a hot dog), slice each section horizontally so that the bread is shaped like a hot dog bun.
  2. Top each section of bread with a scoop of Sloppy Joe followed by a grilled hot dog. Top with Cole Slaw and yellow mustard.

Notes

  • To save time you can purchase your Cole Slaw from the deli section of your grocery store. Just make sure to check that the ingredients are easily recognizable!
  • Hot Dogs that are free from funky ingredients can be a little tough to find. I like and recommend Applegate.
