Ok, ok.. I know what you're thinking. "Healthy Chocolate Milkshake ... hard pass."
Maybe healthy wasn't the best adjective to describe this guy. It can be subjective, I mean after all.. what does that even mean? But "Chocolate Milkshake Made From Only Real Whole-Foods" seemed a little long for the recipe title. Yesterday was a long day in the kitchen and "Healthy" was what I came up with. Can we just go with it?
This milkshake is sweetened entirely with dates and made from ingredients that you most likely have hanging out in your pantry. If you don't stock Medjool dates, you can easily substitute honey in their place. Both are delicious options.
My boys (Joe included) went crazy for these Healthy Chocolate "Milkshakes".
A few words of disclosure: This was sweet and chocolate-y enough for us, but we don't eat a lot of overly sugary foods. This is not the same experience as driving through Sonic and getting a shake with whip and a cherry. Manage your expectations:) In fact, presenting them as a chocolate smoothie might be best when serving small children (or a picky spouse).
Now that we have the "fine print" out of the way, let's talk about all the things I LOVE about this recipe.
- It's super simple to make, dump and blend. Seriously, there is nothing else to it. You don't even have to have any of the ingredients pre-frozen. It's a milkshake on demand type situation.
- It's tasty. Just because it doesn't taste like a traditional milkshake doesn't mean it's not delicious. Seriously, my boys absolutely devour them.
- It's refined sugar free. Aka.. no regular white cane sugar used. As mentioned above, this one is sweetened using Medjool dates or honey... chef's choice.
Let's take just a minute and talk about Blenders. Dates can be a little tough on them. If smoothies/milkshakes are something you plan to incorporate often into your diet, I recommend investing into a high quality blender. The 2 most well-known are Blendtec and Vitamix. I have tried both, but prefer the Blendtec. My reasons are pretty simple.
- The Blendtec is shorter, meaning it fits under my cabinets. The Vitamix is taller and difficult to store.
- The Blendtec has pre-programmed buttons (smoothie, soup, dip, etc.) while the Vitamix does not.
That said.. both are great option and neither will have ANY trouble blending up whatever smoothie situation you are into.
QUICK TIP:
I purchased my Blendtec refurbished 3 years ago. I know, I know.. a used Blender sounds gross. It's NOT! The pitcher, blade and base all come brand new wrapped in plastic. Only the insides have been refurbished. I saved A LOT of money. Like I said.. high speed blenders = $$$$$$$. You can purchase a Certified Refurbished Blendtec HERE.

Time Saving Tips and Tricks
Prep: Real Food Chocolate "Milkshakes" don't require any ingredient (other than ice) to be pre-frozen. The recipe is so simple that no prep work is really necessary!
Make Ahead: You can make these "Milkshakes" the night before.. pre-blended and everything. Just follow recipe directions. Store the finished shakes in the blender pitcher in the fridge. Some separating will occur so I like to re-blend before serving. Note... the consistency will be more like thick chocolate milk if you use this method because the ice will have melted.
Freezer: Not this time. The "Milkshake" will just freeze into a large ice block. Not tasty.
