How how how how is it mid-July already? 4 weeks of Summer break remain. That's 4 weeks to shift my mindset from lets-hang-out-in-our jammies-until-lunch-because-it's-Summer-and-who-cares to one of thinking about make-ahead breakfast options.
Regular school breakfast rotation around here includes, waffles, parfaits, granola bars, muffins and smoothies. One week we may do parfaits with granola bars and the next may be muffins and smoothies. I usually try to prepare 1-2 healthy/freezable options over the weekend. My boys LOVE breakfast, so often by the end of the week we switch over to Lara Bars (our fav) and some fresh cut fruit.
If there's one thing that I have learned about planning school breakfast, it's keep it simple. You don't need to have a repertoire of 30 recipes. Find good simple options that your family enjoys and make them on repeat. Of course, a little creativity is always appreciated by all.
Smoothies are one of the simplest things to change up since the ingredients are so basic. I'm loving Simply Sissom smoothie week because it's forced me to step out of my blending safe zone (i.e. make something other than the same old Best Green Smoothie that has been our go-to for years). Granted, my family has never once complained, but this year I'd like to add a little variety to our smoothie mornings by changing up the fruit combos and add-ins that I'm using. #smoothiegoals
Today's smoothie recipe is one of the newest smoothies that we have been enjoying, in preparation for the school year and our return to quick and easy breakfast options. This Simple Strawberry Smoothie is incredibly easy to make, and relies on two major fruits .. Strawberries + Bananas. Since strawberries are in season and super cheap right now, I've stocked our freezer for the months to come when fresh berries aren't an option. When strawberries are paired with creamy banana, yogurt and almond mil, well.. the result is a powerhouse smoothie fit for ANY school morning.
Time Saving Tips and Tricks
Prep: I love prepping make-ahead smoothie packs for this recipe. Just gather your smoothie cups/containers or bags and write the date and “Strawberry Banana Smoothie” on the front. Add bananas, strawberries and chia seeds. Before sealing, make sure you squeeze out as much air as possible (if using a bag). Seal and place in the freezer for later use. To blend, just add your smoothie contents + ¾ cups of milk and ½ cup of plain yogurt.
Make Ahead: Smoothies will keep overnight in the refrigerator when sealed in a mason jar. This is perfect if you don’t want to run the blender in the morning and wake up the household! They may separate a bit, just mix them back together!
Freezer: Blended smoothies can be stored in the freezer for up to a month in an airtight and freezer safe container. I like to use mason jars for this. To thaw, just remove from freezer the freezer and into the refrigerator overnight. Separation will occur, just stir well.

Description
Sweet, creamy and nutritious Simple Strawberry Banana Smoothie with chia seeds, almond milk and creamy yogurt. Loaded with 5 whole food ingredients and ready in just 5 minutes!
Ingredients
- ½ banana, frozen
- ½ cup strawberries, frozen
- 1 tsp chia seeds
- ¾ cup milk (I like almond)
- ½ cup plain yogurt
Instructions
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Evenly spread out strawberries and bananas. Place into freezer until frozen, about 2 hours. NOTE: If using pre-packaged frozen fruit you can skip this step.
- Add all ingredients to the blender. Blend until fully combined.
Notes
If the smoothie's taste is too bitter... squeeze in a little honey. I like to present it without the added sugar first in hopes that it goes over. For my family... no honey works just fine.
